Things to do in Vlora

This year, Vlora is proudly known as "the city of the sun" and boasts of its sunny weather.

Explore the Beaches

Vlora boasts some stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters. Spend your days relaxing on the shores of Azar Beach and many more:

 Independence Monument

If you want to feel important and maybe a little patriotic, head to the Independence Monument in Vlora. This is where Albania officially told the Ottoman Empire to take a hike back in 1912, which, let’s be honest, was a pretty big deal. The monument itself is quite grand, looking like someone’s idea of a really fancy flagpole that also doubles as a lookout.

From here, you get panoramic views of the city and the old town, so you can pretend you’re overlooking your kingdom, or at least the place you live. It’s a spot full of pride, history, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to take a selfie, preferably with a serious face.

Take a Boat Tour to Karaburun & Sazan Island

Join a daily boat tour to explore the uninhabited Sazan Island (a former military base) and the stunning Karaburun Peninsula, part of a protected marine park.

Muradie Mosque

Explore the Muradie Mosque, one of Vlora’s most significant landmarks. This historic mosque dates back to the 16th century and reflects the city’s Ottoman past.

Sazan Island

Book a boat tour to Sazan Island, a former military base with fascinating historical sites and beautiful landscapes. Enjoy snorkeling, swimming, and exploring the island’s hidden coves.

Kanine Castle

Lace up your hiking boots and trek to Kaninë Castle, perched atop a hill overlooking Vlora. The castle offers breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding coastline, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts.

Independence Museum

 Zvernec Island

Zvernec Island, located just a short 20-minute drive from Vlore, is one of Albania’s most unique destinations. Accessible via a picturesque boardwalk, this small island is adorned with lush pine trees and houses a beautifully preserved 13th-century Byzantine monastery. A hidden gem, Zvernec Island offers a serene escape from the crowds, making it ideal for visiting near sunrise for optimal lighting and solitude.

Enjoy Water Sports

If you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at water sports such as snorkeling, windsurfing, kiteboarding, or paddleboarding. Several water sports centers along the coast offer equipment rentals and lessons for all skill levels.

 Local Cuisine

Treat your taste buds to Albanian delicacies at the city’s many restaurants and cafes. Don’t miss the opportunity to savor fresh seafood dishes, traditional Albanian meze, and local wines.

 Lungomare Promenade

If you fancy a stroll by the sea without actually getting your feet wet, the Lungomare Promenade in Vlora is where it’s at. It’s lined with palm trees, which look like they’ve been imported just to make you feel like you’re somewhere tropical, even if it’s a bit breezy and occasionally confusing.

Along the way, you’ll find cafes and restaurants perfect for sitting down with a coffee, a snack, or something stronger while you watch people pretend to be relaxed. The sea breeze is constant, which is great for cooling off but also means you might lose a hat or two.

Most importantly, the promenade offers panoramic views of the sea, which is just a fancy way of saying “you get to look at lots of water and maybe spot a boat or two.” It’s the kind of place where you can walk, talk, and think deep thoughts, or just scroll your phone pretending to.
